We do not miss conflict because it is complex or majestic... we miss it because nothing is simpler or more personal.
In war all the confusion and mystery is gone. It is you and the foe, chaos and madness, all distilled into action and reaction at their absolute purest form.
So we once reveled in it... to test yourself, and come home the winner in the ultimate game... and when it is gone forever after it's just a little bit duller in the world.
And how do you explain it without sounding mad?

“May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.”
"This report is maybe 12-years-old. Parliament buried it, and it stayed buried till River dug it up. This is what they feared she knew. And they were right to fear because there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it, too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak for these people. You all got on this boat for different reasons, but you all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything I know this, they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, 10, they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people . . . better. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave." ~ Captain Malcom Reynolds

You don't. Unless you've been there, you will never understand.
I have never been in the military. I have worked very intensive (nothing compared to the military) parts of jobs. 9 days of 18 hours on. The intensive focus was and still is addictive. What I am saying is that what you are saying does not sound mad at all. It sounds human.
What NFO said. Never been shot at, but there are some things that I really miss that I can't explain.
