“May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.”

"This report is maybe 12-years-old. Parliament buried it, and it stayed buried till River dug it up. This is what they feared she knew. And they were right to fear because there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it, too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak for these people. You all got on this boat for different reasons, but you all come to the same place. So now I'm asking more of you than I have before. Maybe all. Sure as I know anything I know this, they will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, 10, they'll swing back to the belief that they can make people . . . better. And I do not hold to that. So no more running. I aim to misbehave." ~ Captain Malcom Reynolds

Question time

So, doing some reading earlier and was struck by something which I have noticed both in print and on the internet. Why does it seem that so much of the prepper network is composed of active Christians - seemingly mainly either the various Protestant flavors, or the Mormon contingent? (Note, not starting a debate as to membership in groups just a question!) Which just a couple of exceptions it seems to me that other faiths, or the agnostic/atheist crowd seems underrepresented. Is this due to a lack of presence, or a fact that such members tend to keep their beliefs a bit quieter?

Just curious as to other folks thoughts and experiences...

Mormons consider prepping to be a commandment from God. However, I believe that a good prepper has tight lips. A years worth of food for three is only three months for twelve. Everybody already knows that Mormans are preppers, so it is harder to stay quiet about it.

What is a prepper network?

Yep I am aware of the Mormon commandments regarding this, I am more curious as to why those of other faiths do/do not take part, or at least are quieter about their religions is all...

FPS - preppers are those who practice stocking away food, consumables & other supplies to be prepared for possible disaster scenarios including war, society breakdown & collapse or what have you - some call them survivalists, but IMHO that group tends to have a more militaristic mindset than most preppers who simply are looking to take care of their own...

I'd say you're probably hitting two subsets.

1. Judgment Day Is Coming crowd. They can quote you every single sign and know Revelation better than they know Romans.

2. U.S. Is Falling crowd. Less Revelations-prone than the first, but definitely of the belief that they will soon be forced to give up their religious freedoms.

I'm not militaristic, but I have been stocking some foods against what I believe to be an oncoming disastrous economic backlash against President Obama's policies. When I buy things like rice, I'll grab a second bag so that we'll have plenty when inflation hits.

We are NOT that far off just barely making ends meet anyways, and any inflation could very quickly eat up our gap.

I'm also watching things like federal involvement in education and medical and such closely, because I can very quickly see it becoming a complication for homeschoolers, which I am.

So I suppose I'm sort of grouped among the second on my list, though I didn't even know what a "prepper" was until your entry and am not part of any groups. :)

Huh. I guess I learned something new today! :)

I have a nice stash of ammo only because it is really hard to come by around here, and it is nice to actually have ammo on hand to shoot when I go out to the range. Does this make me a prepper?

My thoughts on those who stock up on food and are preparing for some "collapse"....I see them as paranoid and not trusting in God. If they really do have faith in God, then they are not living it out. Isn't there a verse in the Bible that says something about how God even cares for the sparrow so we shouldn't worry as He will take care of us? (don't remember the exact wording but that is the jest of it) So...if He is in charge and will take care of His people, then why do these people freak out and go stock piling on food, clothing, etc.? Seems to me like they aren't really living out their faith in God.

Someone very close to me is a food hoarder. I don't have that much stashed away, and am now wondering if this is a reaction to finding things that are 10 years past their "use by" date...

Out here in California it would be a good idea to have food and water stashed in case of a quake, but I don't have the room for the minimum suggested.

I dunno, you know, there are a lot of instances in the Old Testament in which people were made aware of needy times ahead and were considered wise for storing up.

I think that there are some whose faith is in their storage, or who hoard from the needy and lack generosity. But I wouldn't say that the only reason people do so is from lack of faith in God's providence.

After all, it could be that part of my extra bag of rice will be God's providence to another family when inflation hits... :) And stocking up when the price is good (like the once-a-year can sale up here) is just good sense.

Part of it is that you can't be charitable or profit in a crisis if you have nothing to share or trade.
